Doing Right Because He Made Us Right

"If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of Him." 1 John 2:29

Have y'all heard the expression, "Let's not get the cart before the horse"? Quite an image, isn't it? Imagine hooking up a horse behind a cart and expecting the cart to get anywhere. Kinda silly, ain't it? The horse is the energy put in place to pull the cart along. I guess a contraption could be devised so a horse could push a cart—except for one thing, horses do better at pulling than pushing, right?

As silly as that sounds to hook up a horse behind a cart, it's just as silly to think I could do right, and from my doing, be born of God. Nope—that kind of thinking is getting the cart before the horse. You see, our doing doesn't get us born, but our being born, now that'll get us doing.

And one more thing—what about the part, "If you know that He is righteous"? Do you? Do you know Jesus is righteous? Yes. He is perfectly right with God. Completely aligned and in union with God. And you and I, well if we've been born of Him, we're righteous too—in Him! Now I know if you're like me, you're plenty sin conscious and self conscious, but the question is, are we Christ conscious and righteousness conscious? I wonder how our lives would be different if we were.

"God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." 2 Corinthians 5:21

Let's pray.

Holy Spirit, give us a strong awareness of our righteousness in Christ. Help us to live more from the Life You've put in us, than from the condemnation of what we were before. Amen.
